How to Choose the Perfect Location for Headshots & Portraits in Lake Tahoe and Reno
One of the first questions you might have is: Where should we take the photos?
The truth is, the right location depends on whether you’re booking headshots or portraits, and on the story you want your images to tell.
For headshots, the background plays a small supporting role. Since these photos are tightly framed, your expression and presence are the stars, and the location only needs to provide a workable space.
For portraits, the location becomes part of the image itself. It helps set the mood, add character, and reflect your personality or lifestyle. Whether you love the natural beauty of Lake Tahoe, the rustic charm of Truckee, or the urban textures of downtown Reno, choosing the right setting can make your portraits feel even more authentic.
What Matters Most for Headshot Locations
Headshots are all about you. Your face, your energy, your confidence. The background isn’t too important, but it still plays a role in making sure nothing distracts from your expression.
Things to keep in mind:
Keep it clean and simple. Neutral backdrops or blurred outdoor scenery work best. This is easy to accomplish most anywhere with a telephoto lens.
Shaded areas are desirable. I have all sorts of tools for dealing with difficult light any time of day, but shaded areas are a big help.
Flexible options. Headshots can be created almost anywhere, from your office to an outdoor corner in Carson City, Reno, or Truckee. It just depends on how much privacy you want!
How Portrait Locations Shape the Story
Portraits are meant to tell more about you. Your personality, your style, sometimes even your passions. The location you choose becomes part of that story.
Questions to consider:
What kind of vibe fits you? Outdoors in Tahoe, rustic Truckee trails, or Reno’s urban backdrops?
Do you want bold colors or soft tones? Nature, city, or even indoor settings all create different moods.
What feels personal to you? A favorite spot or meaningful place can add extra connection to your portraits.
The Challenge of Popular Tahoe Spots in Summer
If you’ve spent any time in Lake Tahoe during the summer, you already know it can get busy. While iconic places like Sand Harbor and Emerald Bay are beautiful, they’ve become difficult to impossible for photography sessions.
Sand Harbor now requires advance reservations, and even then, entry lines can be long.
Emerald Bay requires a shuttle system on peak days, making it nearly impossible to plan a relaxed photo session.
Crowds everywhere. Even if we make it in, finding a quiet spot without dozens of people in the background can be a challenge.
The good news? We don’t need to go to the busiest tourist destinations to create stunning portraits or headshots. There are plenty of less crowded, equally beautiful locations around Lake Tahoe, Truckee, Reno, and Carson City that give us space, privacy, and gorgeous scenery, without the stress of summer traffic and crowds.
When you book your session, I’ll suggest some of these hidden gems so we can focus on you and your story, without the distractions of tourists.
