How to Prepare for a Headshot or Portrait Session

A great photo session isn’t just about showing up. A little preparation goes a long way. Here’s how to get ready for your headshot or portrait session in Lake Tahoe, Truckee, Carson City, or Reno so you look and feel your best.

1. Rest & Hydrate

  • Get a good night’s sleep before your session. Weariness can show in the photos.

  • Stay hydrated the day before; it helps your skin look its best.

  • Avoid excess alcohol or salty foods the night before to prevent puffiness.

2. Grooming & Styling

  • Haircuts: schedule trims at least a few days before, not the day of.

  • Shaving: if clean-shaven, shave the morning of (or evening before if you have sensitive skin like me).

  • Skincare: avoid experimenting with new products right before your session.

3. Clothing Choices

  • Stick to neutral, solid colors (see What to Wear for Headshots & Portraits for detailed tips).

  • Avoid logos, busy patterns, or neon colors.

  • Bring a backup outfit or layers in case you want variety.

4. Bring the Essentials

  • Comb/brush, hair tie, touch-up makeup. I’ll have a lint roller.

  • Glasses? Make sure they’re spotless. I have cleaning wipes just in case.

  • Accessories: simple and minimal.

5. Mindset & Confidence

  • Practice natural smiles in the mirror, not forced grins. I can help bring this out, too.

  • Think about who the photo is for (your ideal client, employer, or audience).

  • Remember: my job is to guide you through flattering poses and expressions; you just need to be open to it.

6. Session Day Tips

  • Arrive on time and relaxed, don’t rush in stressed.

  • If outdoors in Tahoe or Truckee, bring layers and be prepared for changing weather (you know it can snow every month of the year!).

  • For Reno/Carson City sessions, consider if you’d like indoor or outdoor backdrops.

In Summary

  • Prepare your skin, hair, and outfits ahead of time.

  • Bring a few simple extras for touch-ups.

  • Come with confidence knowing I’ll guide you every step of the way.
